Papaya & Grapes in Pregnancy: Myths and facts

Pregnancy is a phase where you need to be extra careful as you need to think about yourself and your unborn baby. There are certain fruits and vegetables you need to avoid during this phase as due to pregnancy your immune system is affected. The most common fruits are papaya and grapes. Let’s learn more about these fruits.

Myth: Papaya intake can cause early labour or miscarriage.

Fact: Unripe and semi ripe papaya may cause early labour but ripe papaya wont cause any problem.

Unripe and semi ripe papaya contains latex which is known to trigger uterine contractions. The enzyme present in papaya is not only abortifacient (causing abortion) but also teratogenic (affect the physiological growth of fetus). However, ripe papaya is good during pregnancy as they contain much lower amount of papain. They are rich in vitamin C, and other nutrients that prevent the onset of pregnancy symptoms, such as heartburn and constipation. Papayas mixed with honey and milk is also an excellent tonic for pregnant women, especially during lactation.


Myth: Grapes can affect the baby in a negative way

Fact: Grapes if consumed in limited amount as they contain loads of antioxidants and vitamins.

You can eat grapes in moderation as they contain vital nutrients such as vitamins, antioxidants, organic acids, fiber, folic acids, etc., that supports the biological changes happening during and post pregnancy. However, you should avoid eating grapes in the last trimester because of their heat-producing property. Excessive consumption of grapes can be toxic due to its high levels of resveratrol. Avoid overconsumption of dry grapes (raisins).
